In a ceremony held in Bozeman, Montana, Congressman Ryan Zinke presented the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Maury Irvine, a World War II Merchant Mariner from Bozeman. The event honored Dr. Irvine's remarkable contributions and service during the war.

Representative Zinke praised Dr. Irvine, stating, “Looking at Dr. Irvine is looking at an American hero. He’s spent a century in a constant commitment to making America a better place." The Congressman highlighted the dedication, resilience, and readiness required of Merchant Mariners, emphasizing Dr. Irvine's exemplary life as a testament to these qualities.

The Congressional Gold Medal, considered one of the most distinguished awards bestowed by Congress, was conferred upon Dr. Irvine in recognition of his outstanding service. This award, historically given to military leaders, has also honored individuals like Sir Winston Churchill, Bob Hope, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Dr. Maury Irvine, born in San Francisco in 1924, played a significant role as a Radio Officer in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Following the war, he pursued a successful career in physics, contributing to the development of early transistorized digital computers and the defense system of the nation's ICBMs.

Now at 100 years old, Dr. Irvine continues to inspire through his life's journey. After retiring, he traveled to over 52 nations, studied with the Dalai Lama, and dedicated his time to volunteering at the Museum of the Rockies. His resilience and dedication serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.
