The Montana Board of Regents announced on Apr. 14 that Dr. Jeremiah Shinn has been selected as the 20th president of the University of Montana.

Shinn’s appointment follows a national search with over 70 applicants from across the country, underscoring the significance of leadership at an institution serving more than 11,000 students according to the official website of the University of Montana. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs through established admissions processes and extends its reach to students in Missoula and beyond through online and distance-learning options, according to its official website.

“I am honored to be named the 20th president of the University of Montana and eager to get started,” said Shinn. “I am inspired by the remarkable students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members who make UM so special, and I look forward to joining this extraordinary team to build on its strong foundation and shape a bright future together.”

Montana Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian said Shinn was chosen after an expedited but comprehensive process led by Christian himself with support from a presidential search advisory work group and AGB Search. “Dr. Shinn’s on-campus visit affirmed our belief that he is an exceptional candidate who, throughout the search process, repeatedly rose to the top of an outstanding and diverse field of applicants,” said Christian. “His demonstrated leadership, commitment to student success and collaborative spirit make him uniquely suited to lead the University of Montana.”

Board Chair Todd Buchanan also welcomed Shinn’s selection: “Dr. Shinn brings not only experience and insight, but also a clear respect for the University of Montana’s role in the life of our state,” Buchanan said. “His approachable leadership style and clear vision for supporting student success resonated throughout his visit, and we’re excited to welcome him to the University of Montana.”

Shinn currently serves as interim president at Boise State University where he has focused on enhancing student engagement and expanding educational opportunities. He previously held roles as vice president for student affairs at both Boise State University and Louisiana State University.

The university operates within higher education as a public research institution emphasizing academic excellence in both virtual tours for prospective students as well as hands-on education in picturesque settings according to its official website.

Shinn will begin his new role at UM on July 1.
