BAUCUS '78 COMMITTEE: POLITICO / Morning Consult Poll: Voters Back Trump’s Decision to Kill Top Iranian Military Commander

Baucus '78 Committee issued the following announcement on Jan. 8

PAccording to the latest POLITICO/Morning Consult Poll, 47% of voters approve of President Donald Trump's decision to kill top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani while 40% disapprove. 85% of Republicans approve of the president's decision compared to 70% of Democrats who disapprove. Among independent voters, 40% approve while 36% disapprove. Half of voters say the killing will make the United States less safe compared to 32% who say the opposite. Additionally, 69% of respondents believe the killing makes war with Iran more likely including 79% of Democrats, 65% of independents, and 58% of Republicans. The poll was conducted January 4-5.

"Our polling suggests President Trump’s standing with voters is at best unchanged amid fallout from the Soleimani killing," said Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consult's Vice President. "This week, 56% of voters disapprove and 41% approve of the president's job performance, compared with 52% who disapproved and 44% who approved two weeks ago."

Nearly half of voters (49%), say "President Trump should have sought congressional approval before moving forward with the airstrike in Baghdad" compared to 37% who say he was "correct to move forward...without congressional approval." Voters overwhelmingly view Iran as an enemy (69%), up 22-points from a mid-September poll. Half of voters disapprove of President Trump's handling of foreign policy. Trump’s approval rating sits at 41%, while 56% of voters disapprove of his job performance.

Regarding impeachment, 51% of respondents favor the Senate removing President Trump from office. Nearly half of voters (49%), say that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should send articles of impeachment to the Senate as soon as possible to move forward with a vote. Comparatively, 35% say Pelosi should wait for additional information on the trial. 57% of voters say the Senate should call additional witnesses to testify including 71% of Democrats, 56% of independents and 40% of Republicans.
