Voters in Columbia Falls favor 3% resort tax

Vote 1200x675

Flathead Beacon has reported that voters in Columbia Falls favored a 3% resort tax by a small margin in the June 2 election.

While 768 people voted for the resort tax, which would be in place for 20 years, there were less than 100 (670) people who cast their ballot against it.

Now, the ordinance will go to the Columbia Falls City Council for a public meeting to officially put the new tax measure in place, the paper said.

More than 50% of the new funds will assist public safety, like a fire department, while a quarter of it will help with property tax relief.

City manager Nicosia noted the number of voters who showed up on election day and said, according to Flathead Beacon, “We had an excellent turnout. The vote reflects the communication and information that the city council put out. They worked on it for almost two years, putting it all together, carefully identifying what will be taxed, defining what’s a luxury. The council really did a lot of work in advance, and I think the people saw that.”
