USFS News Release: Trail Clearing and Maintenance Projects

Trail Clearing and Maintenance Projects

Hamilton, MT, July 27 — Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen (BRBCH) and the Bitterroot National Forest are partnering on several trail clearing and maintenance projects taking place in August.

The first project is scheduled for August 2-8th at the East Fork Guard Station near Sula.  Volunteers will be replacing existing posts, rails, and jack fence along with constructing three new holding pens within the corral and gates.

The second project will take place August 13-14th at the Gold Creek Trailhead on the Stevensville Ranger District.  Volunteers will be doing general trail maintenance including clearing blow down and cutting and removing brush.  Plans are to clear the connecting trails of Gold Creek Trail and Gold Ridge Trail.

The third project is scheduled August 19-21st at Two Good Cabin on the Darby-Sula Ranger District.  Volunteers will be cleaning and clearing trails in the area while also training members interested in leading future trail projects.  Volunteers and stock will be camping at Two Good Cabin.

The group will also be providing pack support for the Forest Service from July to September on the St. Mary’s Lookout Trail.  Trips are planned to the Lookout on August 11th and August 25th.

The public should be on alert and watch out for volunteer work crews and stock at these locations.  For more information visit www.bchmt.org/bitterroot.

BRBCH was established more than 40 years ago and was one of the first chapters in the nation.  Their goal is to ensure that stock users can continue to access backcountry and wilderness trails.  The club annually contributes over 600 personal hours and 425 stock hours on projects, most on the National Forest, that create significant benefits for all trail users and for the natural resources.
