The numbers of people experiencing homelessness and living unsheltered in Missoula increased dramatically after the closing of the Emergency Winter Shelter in early April. The number of people sheltering outdoors far exceeds Missoula's community sheltering and supportive housing capacity. Mayor Hess directed City staff to support and assist nonprofit providers during this emergency with financial resources, facilities and technical assistance to avert or minimize the immediate peril to life and property and to mitigate further suffering, injury, loss or other damage associated with this emergency of homelessness. The City of Missoula, with its contractor the Poverello Center and help from Missoula County, intends to reopen its Johnson Street Community Center as soon as possible, likely in late August or early September, to offer some relief for the community.
