Missoula City-County has implemented health code regulations requiring bear-resistant garbage containers in designated areas known as the Bear Buffer Zone. The initiative aims to ensure the safety of both residents and bears by reducing potential conflicts.

The rules are being introduced gradually across different regions. Grant Creek and the Rattlesnake Valley were included under these regulations on April 30, while the Potomac Valley followed on September 1. According to the rules, private garbage haulers must supply either bear-resistant garbage carts or secured bins to residents.

Residents who have not yet received a bear-resistant container from their hauler are encouraged to request one. Additional information about the background and scientific reasoning behind these regulations can be found on Missoula County Voice's website: https://missoulacountyvoice.com/bear-smart-missoula
