The University of Montana will recognize more than 2,000 degree candidates from the class of 2026 during its Spring Commencement ceremonies on May 9.
This event marks a significant milestone for students and their families as they complete their academic programs. The university serves over 11,000 students and offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through established admissions processes according to the official website.
Leslie Webb, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at the University of Montana, said, “This is a special time of year, as Commencement marks the culmination of the academic journey of so many of our students. Our graduates are ready to seize the opportunities UM has provided them, and we look forward to cheering them on as they pursue successful careers and contribute their skills to the benefit of our society.”
Two ceremonies will take place at Adams Center: one at 9 a.m. for graduates from several colleges including Public Administration and Policy; Arts and Media; Missoula College; Health; and Business. The second ceremony at 2 p.m. will include graduates from Education; Forestry; Science; Humanities; and Social Sciences. Honorary doctorates will be presented to author Debra Magpie Earling—who taught creative writing and Native American Studies at UM for more than three decades—and business leader Joe Whittinghill.
The University functions as a public research institution emphasizing academic excellence in both virtual and in-person settings according to its official website. It also extends educational opportunities beyond Missoula through online learning options.
Commencement is free and open to all attendees. Additional accessible accommodations are available on request by contacting Brandon Kress in advance or visiting the Accessibility page linked on UM’s site. Those unable to attend can livestream the ceremonies via the Spring 2026 Commencement website.
According to its official website, UM operates within higher education with an inclusive atmosphere focused on hands-on education amid picturesque surroundings.
