Montana football’s annual Griz Spring Game saw the Maroon squad defeat the Silver team 20-7 at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, as young players and newcomers made notable contributions on Apr. 10.
The game provided an opportunity for less experienced athletes to showcase their abilities during the final practice of the spring season. New Defensive Coordinator Eric Sanders’ unit performed well for both teams, with Maroon using a defensive touchdown, big offensive plays, and strong special teams to secure the win.
First-year head coach Bobby Kennedy said his primary goal was keeping players healthy. “Number one, really pleased we stayed healthy. But there was some good hitting out there, and I thought both sides were physical. We still have to do some things on the offensive and defensive line, those guys need to be bolstered a little. But I was really happy with how it turned out today,” said Kennedy.
Defense dominated much of the contest, as Maroon limited Silver’s offense to just 152 yards while Silver allowed only 64 rushing yards. Kennedy praised his team’s progress throughout spring practices: “I’ve seen the progress as spring has gone on, so I’m really pleased with the defense. We’ve got to get bigger up front and we’re going to do everything we can in recruiting to get those bigger guys, but I was really pleased.” He also highlighted consistent energy among players: “If there’s one thing I’m really pleased about – I can’t remember a day that I said ‘we’re just slogging around.’ I thought the guys came with a great attitude every day and they were moving fast.”
Sophomore quarterback Cody Schweikert led all passers with 119 yards for Maroon after returning from injury reserve status; Kalispell’s Gage Sliter added another 83 passing yards for Maroon. Korbin Hendrix and Ian Finch combined for seven catches totaling 123 receiving yards.
Kennedy commented on quarterback development: “(The quarterback play) was really good. They needed reps because a lot of times they don’t get them…it’s good those guys got reps this spring, so we have to just keep bringing them along.” The running back group also stood out despite star Eli Gillman resting; Dylan Paine scored on a short run early in the game while freshman Hashim Jones contributed hard-earned yardage.
Special teams played a key role as kicker Jo Silver made field goals from distances of 52 and 48 yards while linebacker Sam Merriman returned an interception for a touchdown. For Silver’s only score, Sliter connected with transfer freshman Legend Lyons on a back shoulder fade in the end zone.
Kennedy expects continued growth from young receivers like Lyons: “(Lyons) is a big guy and I think he can run…I think once he really dissects the offense and learns it in and out his athletic ability is going to take over…he went up and got it…he’s still young but I’ve seen growth, and we expect good things out of him.” The coaching staff will now focus on recruiting across Montana high schools before summer workouts begin.
