The U.S. and Canada agreed to close the northern border to all nonessential travel on March 18 and many farmers in Montana are wondering how that will affect trade.
“We will be, by mutual consent, temporarily closing our Northern Border with Canada to non-essential traffic. Trade will not be affected. Details to follow!” the president tweeted.
However, as the news got to Montana farmers, they expressed their nervousness about trade.
According to the Missoulian, Montana Grain Growers Executive Vice President Lola Raska reassures farmers that trade and fertilizers are going to move. Raska also says that grains will move as well.
“Trade and fertilizer and all that are going to move," Raska told the Missoulian. "Grain is going to move as usual. We contacted all our congressional offices, and they hooked up with the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection and they said specifically that fertilizer will continue to move because that’s an important input that comes down from Canada."
