The University of Montana School of Journalism is set to host its annual Dean Stone Lecture with a fresh approach this year. The event will feature the screening of "The Wonder and the Worry," a documentary that explores the careers of two notable photojournalists: former National Geographic editor Chris Johns and his daughter, Louise Johns, an alumna of UM.
This event, free and open to the public, is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, at the University Center Theater. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with both photojournalists during a Q&A session following the film screening.
The documentary offers insight into Chris Johns' career journey from Oregon's rural landscapes to his leadership role at National Geographic. It also delves into Louise Johns' experiences navigating modern photojournalism amid digital changes and commercial pressures. As noted by Film Daily, “the film immerses viewers in the complexities of storytelling amid digital disruption and commercial imperatives.”
Chris Johns currently serves as this semester’s Pollner Distinguished Professor at UM, where he teaches a class on photographing complex social issues. Louise Johns holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees from UM's School of Journalism.
Lee Banville, professor and director of the School of Journalism, expressed enthusiasm about this year's event: “We have been so lucky to get to know both Chris and Louise over the years as photographers, journalists and colleagues,” he said. “This year’s Dean Stone event will let the public meet and learn so much more about these extraordinarily talents and compassionate people.”
