Applications Being Accepted for Sheriff's Citizens Academy!

Ravalli County Steve Holton announced the 3rd Ravalli County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy will be held March 1st through April 19th, 2023.  Citizens interested in attending the Academy should contact Sergeant Brad Weston at 406-375-4032 or bweston@rc.mt.gov.  Applications are available at the Sheriff’s Office in Hamilton, or on the Ravalli County website https://ravalli.us/597/Sheriffs-Citizens-Academy.

The Sheriff Citizen’s Academy is an eight week course designed to familiarize citizens with various aspects of their local Sheriff’s Office, such as administrative philosophy, how their Sheriff’s Office operates, and the challenges our community faces.  The Sheriff Citizen’s Academy will consist of classroom and hands on training.

The program covers procedures from patrol and investigations, domestic violence, use of force, defensive tactics, and Detention Center operations, as well as drug education and other operational tasks.   The curriculum does not fulfill State of Montana certification requirements for peace officers.  The Sheriff Citizen’s Academy is free, but space is limited to 20 participants.  Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, reside in Ravalli County, and must be willing to attend all scheduled classes.  Applicants will be subject to a criminal background check. This year classes will be held every Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. through March and April.

The deadline for applications is February 10th and applicants will be contacted when the background process is complete.

Sheriff Holton said, "we are very excited to be able to offer the citizens academy again, after almost three years with out hosting one.  This a great way for us to interact with our citizens, and help people understand how their Sheriff's Office operates".  Sheriff Holton also thanked Captain Travis McElderry for his hard work getting the original Citizens Academies off the ground, and now Sergeant Brad Weston for taking the reins and making it a reality in 2023!
