Today, Co-Chair of the Northern Border Security Caucus and Western Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke spearheaded a letter signed by 22 Members of Congress addressed to Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. The letter highlights concerns regarding the significant increase in apprehensions along the Northern border.

In the letter, the lawmakers expressed their unease about the surge in illegal crossings and drug seizures along the Northern Border, particularly noting the influx of fentanyl. They emphasized the strain felt by local communities and Border Patrol agents due to the escalating situation, criticizing the Department of Homeland Security's perceived abandonment of its duty to protect the nation's borders.

According to the lawmakers, Border Patrol data reveals a substantial rise in apprehensions along the Northern Border, with a 114% increase in the first four months of Fiscal Year 2024 compared to the same period in FY 2023. The letter asserts that this surge is unsustainable and indicative of a broader failure to secure the border.

The letter to Secretary Mayorkas builds upon Zinke's previous efforts to address border security issues, including prior correspondence and legislative initiatives aimed at enhancing Northern border security measures. Zinke's commitment to border security is underscored by his track record of supporting comprehensive border bills in Congress.

The concerns raised in the letter align with recent reports highlighting the challenges faced along the U.S.-Canada border, with various media outlets documenting the rise in illegal crossings and the impact on communities in Northern states.

As the situation at the Northern border continues to evolve, Zinke and his fellow lawmakers are urging Secretary Mayorkas to take decisive action to address the growing security concerns and safeguard the nation's borders.
