Missoula cares about its wildlife. City and County elected officials and staff worked with the Missoula City-County Board of Health to expand the Bear Buffer Zone from the edges of the city out into the county and to pass regulations requiring bear-resistant garbage containers in the Buffer Zone. The regulations will take effect neighborhood by neighborhood, with the Rattlesnake and Grant Creek areas coming first.

"Nearly half of human-bear conflicts in the Missoula Valley are caused by unsecured garbage. Keeping garbage out of reach of bears keeps bears from getting into trouble. It also keeps people safe by not enticing bears into neighborhoods."
