Congressman Ryan Zinke raised concerns this week at a House Appropriations Transportation Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Subcommittee hearing regarding the diversion of $4.5 million from the Montana Housing Authorities (MHA) reserves by the HUD. The reserves are crucial for providing financial assistance to renters in Montana facing affordability challenges due to inflation and housing costs.

Patti Webster, CEO of MHA, emphasized the importance of returning the funds to Montana agencies, stating, “We are asking that HUD to give Montana agencies their money back, to allow for full flexibility in using those funds to assist the families in our local communities, and to stop the overreach of the continued offsets.”

In response to the issue, Rep. Zinke expressed his concerns, particularly in the current economic climate, saying, “Renters in Montana are feeling the pressure right now under Biden’s inflation...Now is not the time for the administration to swipe money from struggling Montanans trying to make ends meet.” He also commended the MHA for bringing the matter to his attention and working with his staff to address the issue.

The diversion of funds has impacted approximately 576 Montana families, hindering their access to housing assistance. Zinke urged the administration to rectify the situation promptly to ensure existing contracts can proceed and the MHA can continue its essential work of providing relief to those in need.

The MHA's plea for the return of the diverted funds echoes the sentiment shared by Congressman Zinke, who is dedicated to advocating for the well-being of Montanans impacted by the housing crisis.
